Base View
This is a sectioned base of the type of projectile pictured here.  The method of securing the copper ring sabot by casting it into recessed notches in the projectile base can be seen.  The base of the projectile is quite flat, unusual in a Confederate conical projectile.

This is the projectile that General Abbot said was much better than the Parrott and should be adopted by the United States.  It never threw the band, always took the rifling and did not chip at the base.  The sabot is secured by 9 lugs, fitting into corresponding notches in the projectile base. The wooden fuze plug is unusually large, almost 2 inches in diameter.  This specimen was recovered from Petersburg, Virginia.
