A very interesting projectile of the Armstrong shunt system. This specimen has six rows of shunts with five to a row. The eared cap at the ogive screws off to fill the bursting chamber. The projectile depended on the heat generated by friction as it is penetrated the armor to fire the bursting charge. The number "92" indicates that this pictured specimen was recovered from Fort Fisher, North Carolina. |
