Molded in raised
letters on the bottom of the lead base are the letters "HOTCHKISS 3 67/100 JAN. 7TH
1862 PATENT". Upon firing, the Hotchkiss canister would often take the grooves of the
cannon's rifling, creating an uneven dispersion of the canister balls. Addison M. Sawyer
attempted to correct this problem with his ridged-cylindrical
canister. This pictured example was recovered near the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia,
at the site of the August 1864, City Point explosion. |
