Federal Parrott case-shot projectile

This pictured specimen is a good example of the Federal Parrott case-shot projectile, which was manufactured in large quantities during the war.  The black pitch matrix was patented by Alfred Berney of New Jersey on June 17, 1862, patent #35,659, and was an improvement over the sulphur matrix .  In the manufacture of case-shot projectiles, Mr. Berney used in his matrix the residue from the distillation of coal-tar, generally known as "asphaltum."  Go here for a complete specimen.
