Federal 3-inch Schenkl projectile

The common shell interior construction has a bursting charge cavity that does not contain case-shot material.  This is an example of the most common Federal 3-inch Schenkl projectile manufactured.  According to Abbot's Siege Artillery in the Campaigns Against Richmond, the Schenkl brass percussion fuze was 82% effective.   Over 125,000 3-inch Schenkl shells were purchased by the Federal Ordnance Department.  Go here for a complete specimen.
