The concept of polygonal-cavity projectiles is generally attributed to
Confederate Colonel John W. Mallet of Macon, Georgia, whose ideas may have been influenced
by the segmented projectiles of British origin. There are at least four different
designs of spherical projectiles with polygonal-cavity interiors know to the authors.
The inner casting core created lines of weakness, which aided in the creation of a
uniform number of fragments when ignition of the bursting charge fractured the projectile. |
