Federal Hotchkiss Percussion fuzed shell

The Hotchkiss pattern represented by this pictured specimen was designed to explode at the time of impact.  It did not require flame grooves on the projectile body due to the percussion fuze system.  This is an example of a projectile that does not contain case shot.  Projectiles that contain only gunpowder in their bursting cavities are referred to as common shells.  Go here for a complete projectile.
