The November 2, 1861 issue of Scientific American described this projectile and matching rifle as being manufactured by Corning, Winslow, & Company in Troy, New York. It has five smooth-shaped flanges and five vertical grooves on the projectile body. It had a hard prepared leather sleeve around the lower third of the projectile body to help prevent windage. This pictured specimen was recovered from the West Point Test Range in New York. No explosive Pattison projectiles are known to exist. There are at least three different types of Pattison projectiles in two different calibers. |
