There have been several
battlefield specimens of this pattern recovered. Due to the projectile's weight and
size, it is believed to be for the Ellsworth breech loading rifle. There is a square
hole in the base approximately 1/4" wide and deep. One specimen was found at
Fort Hindman, Kentucky. Lubricated twine was wrapped around the outside to be
