William Boekel of Pennsylvania first patented this style of projectile on September 16, 1862, patent #36,449. Boekel also patented on April 12, 1864, patent #42,268, an improved projectile, as shown in this specimen. The lead jacket is covered by a thin brass sleeve. This sleeve was to help prevent the lead from fouling the bore of the rifle. The lead jacket is concave on the base. The Boekel projectile was tested at the Washington Arsenal test range in October of 1864, with good marks. There are no known battlefield recoveries of this projectile. |
