John G. Butler patented this projectile on September 26, 1871, patent #119,313.  The brass sabot was screwed onto the iron base of the projectile in an attempt to prevent the sabot from turning or slipping.  There is a space between the sabot and the projectile body to receive the expansion gasses, which allowed the sabot to enter the rifling.
