The tapered portion on the body of this pictured specimen has an unusual shaped cylindrical base knob. Examples of this variety have been recovered from Port Hudson, Louisiana, and Vicksburg, Mississippi. This pictured projectile was recovered from the 1863 Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi.  This variety of Schenkl pattern projectile is very rare. This would appear to be an early Schenkl pattern that was manufactured in limited quantities.  It is fitted with the Schenkl percussion fuze that has a rounded outer edge and no stamping on the fuze face.
