Projectiles of this pattern are traditionally named after their attributed site of manufacture: the Selma Arsenal in Selma, Alabama. In the groove between the high copper sabot and the cylindrical portion of the projectile body can been seen remnants of a hemp-like material. This material was originally greased, thus helping to serve as a lubricant for the cannon bore. This Selma pattern projectile has a copper sabot that is imbedded into the iron body of the projectile during casting by a means of a square or rectangle post. Examples of this pictured Selma pattern projectile are extremely rare. |
