Notice the heavy lathe marks on the bourrelets as well as the copper sabot of this Selma manufactured projectile. Most often, fired projectiles in this pattern have the sabot distorted or partly missing. This pattern tended to tumble due to its incorrect length-to-diameter ratio for the caliber of the gun. A good ratio is between 2 1/2 to 3 times the diameter or caliber for the length of the projectile. Examples of this particular Selma variety have been recovered from Spanish Fort, Alabama. |
