This is the same pattern as the Archer pictured here, but without the lead sabot. Note the two grooves on the tapered cone holding the lead sabot in place during expansion. A large number of Archer projectiles were manufactured at the Bellona Foundry in Virginia, and they were also manufactured in other deep South locations, including Selma Arsenal in Alabama. This variety of the Archer pattern has been recovered from the April 1862 Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee. |
