Note the lubrication groove between the lead band and the body of this unfired projectile. A lubricant was applied to the linen or canvas that covered the lead band. This helped to prevent the bore of the cannon from being fouled with the lead from the sabot. Several Archer projectiles similar to the variety shown have been recovered from the June 1864 Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. |
