This unfired Archer projectile has one groove and four vertical flanges to help hold the lead sabot on the projectile during firing. A small additional bottom ring or groove can be seen at the base of the projectile body. Note the hemp rope which was greased to help decrease the amount of friction generated in the bore of the cannon. This variety of Archer projectile has been recovered from Virginia battlefields.
