Note in the pictured specimen that the lower portion of the iron projectile body is cylindrical and not tapered, which is uncommon in the Archer pattern of projectiles. The lead sabot extending to the base of the projectile, which also is unusual. This projectile was recovered from the April 1862 Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee. Similar specimens were fired by the 5th Company, Washington Artillery, of New Orleans, Louisiana. Leeds and Company, of New Orleans, Louisiana, delivered to the Confederacy a total of seventeen 3.3-inch bronze rifles between October 1861 and April 1862. Three surviving cannon showing a seven groove rifling pattern can be found at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. |
