Confederate

Broun

DIAMETER: 3.61 inches
GUN: 3.67-inch caliber rifle
LENGTH: 5 1/2 inches
WEIGHT: 8 pounds 12 ounces
CONSTRUCTION: Shell, lines of weakness
SABOT: Copper ring
FUZING: Wooden fuze plug, paper time fuze

It is generally believed that this Broun projectile variety would have tumbled in flight due to its inadequate length-to-caliber ratio. The acceptable length of a rifled projectile is 2 1/2 to 3 times the caliber of the gun. This projectile has twelve rectangle sections with lines of weakness cast in. The interior was designed to fragment, upon detonation, into equal pieces with the exception of the nose and base. Note the lathe marks on the single bourrelet and high copper sabot. This pictured example is unfired and was recovered from an Alabama site. To learn more about the inventor click here.
