This projectile is correctly named after its inventor, General Alexander B. Dyer. Federal government records indicate that William Sellers and Company manufactured 107,230 3-inch Dyer projectiles under their Federal ordnance contracts from September 26, 1861, through May 24, 1862. The pattern is found in case-shot and common shell. This Dyer pattern sabot is found with and without flame grooves. The majority of the specimens were fired from Federal artillery positions, although some were captured and subsequently used by the Confederate artillery. The brass percussion fuze has Schenkl's patent date stamped on the face. |
