This Dyer projectile's nose is more tapered than the standard Dyer pictured here. This rare variation is found in both common shell and case shot. There are four flame grooves cast into the sabot; note the lubrication and expansion groove above the sabot. Specimens have been recovered from Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Jenkins Ferry, Missouri. Some Dyer projectiles of this variety have been recovered with the brass Schenkl percussion fuze. |
