James Type II Shell
Note the tin covering on the lead sabot which was an attempt to help prevent the leading of the cannon bore during firing, which caused excessive wear and tear on the cannon's rifling. The two-piece James percussion fuze often failed to explode the projectile, and when the fuze worked properly, the small ineffective bursting cavity often led to unsatisfactory fragmentation. The seam where the tin covering joined together is clearly visible. Note the impression of the canvas on the tin sides of the projectile's sabot. Click here for a cross-sectional view.
