Confederate

Tennessee Sabot
Pattern I, Sub-pattern I

DIAMETER: 2.18 inches
GUN: Confederate mountain rifle, 2.25-inch caliber
LENGTH: 4 5/8 inches
WEIGHT: 2 pounds 11 ounces
CONSTRUCTION: Shell
SABOT: Copper plate
FUZING: Copper fuze plug, paper time fuze

The copper fuze plug shown in this specimen is smaller in diameter than the standard Confederate copper fuze plug used in Read projectiles. The central bolt is flush with the sabot, which is seldom seen in the Tennessee Sabot pattern. Three iron pins protrude from the base of the projectile through corresponding holes in the copper plate. These iron pins were designed to help prevent the sabot from spinning around the center bolt when fired.
