This is the most common Tennessee Sabot variety recovered in the 3-inch caliber size. It is often found with the copper sabot deformed or missing. An article written in 1866 by Confederate General Edward Porter Alexander located in the Southern Historical Society Papers, states that the Mullane [Tennessee Sabot] shell "failed, however, about three times out of four times [by] breaking its connection with the copper sabot, and it very frequently exploded in the gun; while of those which flew correctly, not one-fourth exploded at all."
