This projectile's nose is more pointed and the copper sabot taller and thinner than normally found on 3-inch Read bolts. Note the well defined pattern of the twelve lands and grooves of the 3-inch Confederate rifle impressed on the copper sabot while firing. This specimen was fired by the Federal artillery with captured Confederate cannon and ammunition during the 1863 Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi. The range of the Confederate 3-inch rifle at 6 degrees elevation was 2,250 yards. |
