Note the indentions, commonly referred to as tong holes, located on either side of the fuze hole. These tong holes were designed to aid in loading and aligning the projectile so that the fuze was in the center of the mortar's bore, opposite from the powder charge. Federal Coehorn mortar projectiles were not manufactured with tong holes or ears. |
