Ranges of Rifled CannonThe range of a solid shot or shell in this table was determined by the distance from the muzzle of the gun to the first point of impact made on horizontal ground, with the gun on its appropriate field carriage. The range of a spherical case shot is determined by the distance at which the shell bursts near the ground in the time given, thus showing the elevation and the length of fuze required for certain distances. Tables taken from Instruction For Field Artillery,
1864, pages 31-32, and Military Dictionary by Colonel H. L. Scott, 1864, pages 522,
526, and 531. The author has found several discrepancies in range tables from his sources. |
