The original patent
Andrew Hotchkiss patented the projectile that carried the Hotchkiss name, receiving United States Patent 13,679 in 1855 for a rifled-cannon projectile using a flexible lead ring and a movable base. This three-part principle became one of the most successful rifled-projectile systems of the Civil War.
Andrew died young, and his brother Benjamin B. Hotchkiss carried the design and its manufacture forward, so the projectile is associated with both brothers.
