Serving the guns by the book
Where the ordnance manuals described the guns and ammunition, the instruction manuals described how to work them. Manuals such as Instruction for Field Artillery set out the drill for serving a piece, the movements of the batteries, and the tactics of artillery in the field.
These manuals are primary references for understanding how Civil War batteries loaded, aimed, fired, and maneuvered, and how the crews and their implements worked together.
