The Confederacy's powder
The Confederate States Powder Works at Augusta, Georgia, was among the most successful industrial undertakings of the South. Built at the direction of Chief of Ordnance Josiah Gorgas and planned and run by George W. Rains, it manufactured gunpowder on a large scale.
Its steady output of powder helped keep Confederate guns supplied through the war, filling one of the most critical gaps in a region that had begun the conflict with little means to make its own munitions.
