A Virginia gun foundry

The Bellona Foundry, on the James River some fourteen miles above Richmond, was a private cannon foundry that operated from 1819 and cast ordnance for the government. It stood near the Bellona Arsenal, a military post that stored and repaired arms.

Owned in this period by Dr. Junius L. Archer, the foundry cast guns that, with the great Tredegar works at Richmond, helped arm the Confederacy during the Civil War.
