Ordnance on the Pacific
The Benicia Arsenal, on San Francisco Bay, was the chief United States ordnance establishment on the Pacific coast. It received, stored, repaired, and issued the arms, ammunition, and ordnance stores for the army's posts throughout the far West.
Distant from the war's main theaters, it nonetheless anchored Federal ordnance supply on the Pacific and served the frontier garrisons through and beyond the Civil War.
