The ammunition carrier

The caisson carried the ammunition reserve for a gun. Its frame held two ammunition chests, like the one on the limber, together with a spare wheel and a few tools and stores. Like a gun carriage, the caisson was hooked to its own limber for the road, so a caisson and limber together carried three chests.

In the field each gun was normally accompanied by a caisson, and the two limber chests and the caisson's chests together held the piece's supply of shot, shell, case, and canister with their fuzes and cartridges.
