Reporting the department's work
Each year the Chief of Ordnance reported on the operations of the Ordnance Department: what the arsenals and armories had made, what had been bought from contractors, what had been issued to the armies, and the state of the department's establishments.
These reports are a valuable record of the quantities and kinds of guns and ammunition produced and of the growth of American ordnance manufacture through the war and after.
