Fixed artillery ammunition

Fixed ammunition attached the projectile and its powder cartridge into a single round, so both were loaded together. It sped the loading of field guns.

Also known as: fixed round.

One-piece rounds

In fixed ammunition the projectile and its powder cartridge were attached together, usually by strapping both to a wooden sabot, so that the whole round was loaded in one motion. This sped the serving of a gun and kept the charge matched to the projectile.

Fixed rounds were used with the field guns, where speed of loading mattered, while the largest guns used separate-loading ammunition.
