The guns of Ticonderoga
When American forces took Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain in 1775, they gained not only the post but its artillery, a store of cannon the fledgling army badly needed. The problem was moving the heavy guns to where they were wanted.
In the winter of 1775-1776 Henry Knox organized the transport of these guns overland by sledge to the army besieging Boston, one of the celebrated logistical feats of the Revolution, which put artillery in American hands at a decisive moment.
