Setting the time

Time fuzes had to be cut to the burning time the gunner wanted before firing. The fuze gouge was the tool for cutting a paper or wooden time fuze to the mark for the chosen number of seconds, exposing the powder train at the right point.

The fuze setter, or a mallet and setter, then drove the cut fuze into its plug in the projectile. These small tools were part of the equipment for serving time-fuzed shell and case.
