James's rifled gun

The James rifle was the rifled gun associated with Charles T. James, firing the James projectile with its ribbed body and lead sabot. Many were bronze guns rifled on the James system, and the type is best known for its part in the 1862 reduction of Fort Pulaski, where rifled fire breached the masonry.

The bronze bore wore quickly under rifled use, and the James system, like other early rifling schemes, was in time displaced by more durable iron rifles.
