Gunner and author
John C. Tidball was a professional artilleryman who commanded horse artillery with distinction in the Civil War, his batteries known for their handling in the field. He was among the ablest of the Federal artillery officers.
Tidball also contributed to the literature of his branch, preparing a manual on the service of heavy artillery that carried his practical knowledge to other officers.
