The Tennessee sabot

John Mullane was a Confederate inventor whose rifled projectile is identified by its cup sabot of copper or wrought iron, a design widely known as the Tennessee sabot. On firing, the cup was forced out into the rifling so the projectile took the grooves.

The Mullane projectile is one of the distinctive Southern rifled systems, found in bolt and shell forms among the ordnance of the Confederate armies.
