A New England arsenal
The Kennebec Arsenal, on the Kennebec River at Augusta, Maine, was one of the United States arsenals maintained to store, repair, and issue arms and ammunition. Like its sister establishments it formed part of the ordnance network that supplied the army.
Its stone buildings served the Ordnance Department through the mid-nineteenth century as one of the depots that held the nation's reserve of military stores.
