Founder of American artillery science
Louis de Tousard was a French artillery officer who served the American cause in the Revolution and remained influential in the ordnance of the early republic. His American Artillerist's Companion, published in the early nineteenth century, was a foundational technical work on artillery in the United States.
Through it and his service he helped set the young nation's artillery on a professional and scientific footing in the decades before the Civil War.
