An arsenal of the harbor
The New York Arsenal was one of the United States arsenals maintained to store, repair, and issue arms and ammunition, serving the army in the region of the nation's principal port. Like its sister establishments it was part of the Ordnance Department's network of depots.
Through such arsenals the great flow of ordnance stores to the armies was received, held, and issued during the Civil War.
