Heavy rifled Parrott

The 100-pounder Parrott rifle, of 6.4-inch bore, was one of the heavy Parrotts used in siege batteries and seacoast defense, notably in the bombardments around Charleston. Its shell of about a hundred pounds carried far and hit hard against masonry and earthworks.

As with the smaller Parrotts, its cast-iron body and wrought-iron band made it comparatively cheap, but the heavy charges strained the design and burst muzzles were not uncommon in prolonged firing.
