Improving the system
United States Patent 29,272, granted to Benjamin B. Hotchkiss in 1860, covered an improvement in projectiles for rifled ordnance, part of the continued development of the Hotchkiss system after Andrew Hotchkiss's original patent.
With this and other patents the Hotchkiss projectiles were refined into the widely used Civil War forms, and the patent records the brothers' successive claims.
