Telling real from repro

Because original ordnance is sought after, the field includes modern reproductions and replicas, some made as honest display pieces and some passed off as genuine, along with honestly misidentified items. Guarding against them is part of responsible collecting.

The surest defense is a thorough knowledge of how authentic guns and projectiles were made and marked, so that materials, construction, wear, and markings that do not fit the period or the pattern can be recognized. Documented provenance strengthens confidence in a piece.
