Career ordnance officer
Stephen V. Benet was a professional ordnance officer of the United States Army, serving at arsenals and in the technical work of the Ordnance Department during the Civil War era. He was known for his contributions to ordnance instruction and administration.
In the years after the war he rose to become Chief of Ordnance of the United States Army, heading the department through a period of modernization.
