Guns of 1812
The War of 1812 was fought with smoothbore artillery on land, lake, and sea. American field armies used light guns and howitzers, the permanent forts mounted heavy seacoast guns against the Royal Navy, and gun-armed squadrons contested the Great Lakes.
The war exposed the young republic's dependence on its arsenals and its need for a settled ordnance system, and it was followed by reforms that regularized American artillery in the decades before the Civil War.
