The capital arsenal
The Washington Arsenal, at Greenleaf Point on the point of land below the capital, was a United States arsenal that stored and issued arms and ammunition and served as a convenient place for the trial and testing of ordnance near the seat of government.
Through the Civil War it was an active ordnance establishment in the defended capital, handling the materiel that passed through Washington.
