Wiard's field gun
The Wiard rifle was a rifled field gun designed by Norman Wiard, who sought to make a strong and mobile piece using semi-steel, a tougher iron than ordinary cast iron. Its distinctive form and carriage set it apart from the standard guns.
A number were made and served in Federal batteries during the war, part of the era's search for better metals and stronger field guns.
